FREEZEOUT TRAIL & WEBSTER STREAM
BACKPACKING TRIPS
One of the quieter wilderness hiking trails
in Baxter State Park is the Freezeout Trail, found in the northern section
of park, where you are not likely to see many people. The little traveled Freezeout Trail offers incredible scenery
and plenty of wildlife, away from the crowds found in the lower end of the
park near Katahdin.
A loop trail, which starts and ends at Trout Brook Farm, will take us to
Hudson Pond, Frost Pond, Webster Lake, Grand Lake Matagamon and miles along
Webster Stream, which Henry David Thoreau paddled on one of his trip to "The
Maine Woods". It is a moderate, 35-40 mile backpacking trip, where each night will be spent at a
remote tentsite or in rustic leanto shelters, all of which offer waterway
views and wilderness settings.
This trip offers
many opportunities for trout fishing, swimming, relaxing and wildlife
watching. For plenty of solitude, this is a great wilderness backpacking experience in the north Maine
woods!
