CHIMNEY POND & KATAHDIN
BACKPACKING TRIPS
By far the most spectacular campground in
Baxter State Park and, perhaps, east of the Rocky Mountains, is Chimney Pond.
This is a shallow, glacially-formed pond surrounded by the two thousand foot
wall and awe-inspiring granite cliffs of the Great Basin.
It is a moderate 3.3 mile hike up to Chimney Pond, where we'll stay in rustic leanto shelters for
all 3-nights, which offer magnificent views of the Katahdin headwall. Weather permitting, day trips to the summit of Maine's
"Greatest Mountain", Katahdin, Maine's second highest peak, Hamlin
Peak, bushwacks into Katahdin's North Basin, and hikes to Blueberry Knoll
are planned. This is one of Maine's most picturesque spots, and a
great experience for all to enjoy.
These are the toughest reservations to get in Baxter Park in the summer, so
early planning is a must!
