BAXTER PARK CAMPING, HIKING & BACKPACKING TRIPS

BAXTER STATE PARK

The magnificent Baxter State Park offers scenery unequaled in Maine and where one can enjoy unlimited possibilities for day and overnight camping, hiking, backpacking & canoeing.

Guided trips from campsites within Baxter Park to Chimney Pond and to the peak of Maine's "Greatest Mountain", Katahdin, or to quiet settings within Baxter Park where one can relax and enjoy the solitude of the north Maine woods.

CHIMNEY POND & KATAHDIN TRIPS

By far the most spectacular campground in Baxter State Park and, perhaps, east of the Rockies, is Chimney Pond.  This is a shallow, glacially-formed pond surrounded by the two thousand foot wall and awe-inspiring granite cliffs of the Great Basin.

An unforgettable trip!

RUSSELL POND & BAXTER PARK INTERIOR TRIPS

Russell Pond is a remote pond in the center of Baxter State Park miles from cars, roads, and the crowds of people that congregate in the campgrounds at the base of Katahdin.

It is an area about as wild as the park has to offer and has many streams, ponds and lakes nearby.  Moose are frequently seen in Russell Pond and the surrounding ponds.  Many interesting features of the park's lumbering history are nearby:  Wassataquoik Stream, Inscription Rock, Grand Falls, and others.  From Russell Pond, trails radiate outward in all directions to even more remote sections of the park.

FREEZEOUT TRAIL & WEBSTER STREAM  BACKPACKING TRIPS

One of the quieter wilderness hiking trails in Baxter State Park is the Freezeout Trail, found in the northern section of park, where you are not likely to see many people.  The little traveled Freezeout Trail offers incredible scenery and plenty of wildlife, away from the crowds found in the lower end of the park near Katahdin.

SOUTH BRANCH PONDS FAMILY CAMPING & HIKING TRIPS

After Chimney Pond campground, the second most spectacular campground in Baxter Park is South Branch Pond.  Situated on a gravel beach on the north shore of Lower South Branch Pond, it has good swimming, canoeing, and excellent climbing trails from the campground.  The surrounding mountains are lower than the Katahdin range to the south, so this fits more closely the requirements of family groups.
