TELOS & WEBSTER LAKE / ALLAGASH &
BAXTER PARK CANOE TRIP
A fun and adventurous canoe trip, first
made famous by Henry David Thoreau on one of his trips to the Maine Woods,
it offers paddling in both the Allagash Wilderness Waterway (Telos Lake)
as well as in Baxter State Park (Webster Lake), and a chance to run the
mile long rips in the Telos Cut that connects both lakes. The lakes
offer fantastic views of Maine's highest peak, Katahdin, and wildlife is
often seen.
Mostly a flat water canoe trip on Telos &
Webster Lakes, the Telos Cut, built in 1841 in order to send logs
south to Bangor lumber mills, has plenty of challenging quick water for
canoeists to learn paddle strokes and test their skills. Campsites each night will be
lakeside and each day there will be plenty of time for relaxing,
swimming, fishing, or moose watching.
This is a 3 night/4 day trip
that can be done in spring, summer or fall. There is a moderate portage
around Telos Dam, and a moderate to difficult portage back to Telos Lake from Webster Lake. A trip through
history, Telos & Webster Lakes are another Maine treasure worth seeing and experiencing!
