SOUTH BRANCH PONDS FAMILY CAMPING & HIKING TRIPS

After Chimney Pond campground, the second most spectacular campground in Baxter Park is South Branch Pond.  Situated on a gravel beach on the north shore of Lower South Branch Pond, it has good swimming, canoeing, and excellent climbing trails from the campground.  The surrounding mountains are lower than the Katahdin range to the south, so this fits more closely the requirements of family groups.

We plan to stay all three nights in tent sites or leanto shelters on or near the pond.  From the campground there are opportunities for several different day hikes to beautiful wilderness settings for all ages to hike.  The canoeing on the pond is relaxing and the fishing can be excellent.  For plenty of solitude, this is a great wilderness camping experience in the north Maine woods!
